Garage sale tips for metro Atlanta
Published Oct. 15, 2026 by Spread the Word ATL
A good garage sale is mostly planning. Here's a simple checklist for metro Atlanta sellers.
Before the sale
- Check your HOA and city rules. Some neighborhoods and cities limit how often you can hold a sale or where signs can go.
- Pick your date and hours. Write down exact start and end times and stick to them, so early-bird and late shoppers know what to expect.
- Team up. A multi-family or neighborhood-wide sale draws more shoppers than a single driveway.
- Sort and price everything ahead of time. Use stickers or a "everything on this table $1" sign. Have a box of small bills and coins ready, and decide whether you'll take mobile payments.
Advertising
- List it early with good photos. Shoppers plan routes the night before. Include the address, dates, hours and your best items (furniture, tools, kids' gear and name brands draw crowds).
- Be specific. "Dining table, power tools, girls' clothes 4T–6" beats "lots of stuff."
- Signs: big, simple and readable from a car, with an arrow and the address. Put them only where they're allowed. In Cobb County, for example, code enforcement says temporary yard-sale signs must be on private property with the owner's permission, not in medians, trees, utility poles or traffic signs, and the county removes about 17,000 signs from the public right of way each year. Take yours down after the sale.
Sale day
- Set up the night before if you can, and put eye-catching items near the street.
- Keep cash on you, not in an unattended box.
- Expect haggling, and get ready to discount in the last hour.
- Have a plan for leftovers: a donation drop-off or a curbside pickup.
